HD LINK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n18u_7sYVxA&hd=1 Check out our new video! So we decided to drop mouse control for aiming. This was largely a balancing issue: giving the player full 360 degree control and the agility of the mouse cursor allowed for too much aim abuse and bullet spamming, so we decided to adjust the weapons axle to…

We have atmospheric entry! It looks better in motion, but being the tease that I am, I figured a time lapse would be more tasteful in a hipster kind of way. This scene is just a brief intro before one of the levels. The heat shield is made up of a few parts that breaks…

Our latest video is now online! What do you think? We’re definitely not a bullet hell shmup. That, and we let you sacrifice agility to shoot in any direction which makes our gameplay a little different from traditional shmups. Our exact genre is more arcade or action-ish in nature, I suppose. We still don’t have…

There was a point where our team had an epiphany. It occurred to us that since our player’s ship has a rotatable axle to mount weapons on, that if said weapon were a stick of some sort, one might feel an inclination to just smack approaching enemies. So it was on this day, boy and…

If the embedded video is giving you problems go straight to the source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBB-2iT0-N8 We have alpha footage ladies and gentlemen! And also, this occasion marks our first blog post to include video! The video is still an alpha, so please have mercy on us at this point. It’s not perfect (and we don’t have…

There’s an accompanying story for this update ladies and gentlemen. About a week or two ago Dallas, Texas rather unusually iced over. The ice isn’t as dangerous as the people that don’t know how to drive on the ice (but don’t tell them that), so I decided to kick back and stay at home. I…

Here’s a little screen cap I snapped while I was doing a few tests with the skybox. This texture has a few small issues to iron out, but so far so good. This colony background will fill out all the areas behind our 3D geometry (skyscrapers, ships, lasers, etc.) to make the space colony look…

In HEAVEN VARIANT, much of the story revolves around the drama that ensues after humanity begins colonizing space near Earth’s orbit. This piece of concept art is the inside of a colony. Its feels overpopulated and grimy as moisture accumulates around the never ending urban skyline. It certainly isn’t a sci-fi utopia, but that’s okay!…

What’s this you might ask? Well. it started out as just a little internal color scheme test, but it really showed the style we’re aiming for so I figured I should toss it online. We really want HEAVEN VARIANT to have a style of its own so we’re using a really heavy-handed cartoon aesthetic. The…

Welcome to the official HEAVEN VARIANT development blog. We’ll be updating this dev blog regularly with plenty of info, screenshots, videos, music, podcasts, and more. HEAVEN VARIANT is a modernized throwback to the classic side scrolling shooter genre and is being produced by Zanrai Interactive, a Dallas, Texas based indie game studio. The game’s presentation…

It looks amazing, I’m a huge fan of … pretty much everything that’s going on here. The retro arcade music, the voice acting that sounds just cheesey enough that I can -imagine- it was the result of a localization effort to bring us a Japanese game, and what looks to be a really neat combat system that I can’t wait to try.
Another comment I have, though, is I’ve seen the link to this blog post tossed around in at least two different forums, but I was surprised when I saw that it didn’t have any comments; I’m pretty sure this is because registration for commenting is something that turns a lot of people who wouldn’t mind leaving a quick comment away, but if you guys are just going off of the comments on the YouTube videos, then it probably doesn’t matter so much.
I’d like to personally express my interest if you were to offer anything like paid Alpha trials, since I’m always up for helping to fund indie games if it means I get to try out the works in progress.
Keep up the good work, and I hope you guys make a real hit! It’s looking amazing.

Thanks, man! Our team appreciates it! Yeah, as far as comment registration goes, spambots were becoming a serious problem not long ago which is why I went ahead and required registration. :/ I know not a lot of people dig that, I don’t personally, but it’s either that or lewd advertisements. With that said, I’m more than happy if people are talking on other online venues though. If people are talking about the game at all makes me peachy keen!
Thanks again for the kind words!

Wow, the game is coming along great!
I’m loving the R-Type feel it’s got and I like the direction you’re going by combining a retro feel with complex graphics. Keep up the great work!
One thing that instantly caught my eye was the “warp speed tunnel” which can use a little work. It doesn’t feel fast enough for what you’re trying to put out.
Keep up the great work, can’t wait to give you all my money to play with this
