Hey guys, Jason here exhausted after a very successful return from the ScrewAttack Gaming Convention! SGC2014 went awesome for us and Stardust Vanguards, nearly 99% of people that played the game seemed to enjoy playing it and we had a great crowd around our booth a lot of the time! We really loved watching the public play the game and develop their own strategies for winning battles which was also crazy cool!

The above video is one that was recorded straight from the convention, played by actual attendees in glorious 1080P and in 60 frames per second. And I also took a ton of pictures and videos of the con attendees playing the game. I’ll be posting it all very soon! But stay tuned for the deluge of convention related videos and gameplay vids. Our new banner for SGC was printed today! I think it looks pretty cool. Our booth will be quite humble honestly. Just a TV, this banner, and some controllers. I know it’s not too ornate but I hope it looks okay for SGC next week! Pretty indie, huh? I know. I hope we won’t stick out like a sore thumb at the con. We’re still hard at work on implementing a few balancing tweaks and last minute touches this week, but we’ll be letting you know how everything goes before the convention next Friday.
Hey guys! Jason here again. So I wanted to talk about our faction avatars because they were really fun to make and I think they add a lot to the visual aesthetics in the game. Each different team in Stardust Vanguards has an avatar. You’ll see them in the corners in our video! And these little avatars react to what’s going on in the game. Is it gong overboard? Eh, probably! But they sure were fun to animate. Of course, they are quite simple really, but they do add a lot of much needed motion and drama outside of the actual gameplay. This is your default avatar’s expression. Just calm and blinking. Too cool for school you might say.
When you’re firing your machine guns you’ll see your avatar animate appropriately with each shot lighting up his/her helmet. We also fire off this animation off when your shield takes damage. The light envelopes the characters helmet, of course, in this GIF it just looks like he’s at a rave.
Eventually you’ll end eating a bullet in the face. It happens. And your avatar will react just long enough before the final explosion does him in. How sad! But taking one for the team is a reality for vanguards! It’s pretty messy. Some of those frames were rather grisly to draw. That skull was a little scary, too. Yikes!
Of course when our valiant player is dead and gone you’ll only see static. No signal. The finality of death is overwhelming.
Oh, but who are we kidding. Your mecha will boot right back up and your pilot will respawn right back on the battlefield to go get revenge… assuming you still have lives left! And yes, I have a penchant for old school command prompt boot-up screens. Don’t be hatin’!
The avatars add a fun little addition to everything going on in game and each different color faction has their own character and set of animations, each with subtle changes and their own personality. For instance, our red team’s character isn’t shocked when he dies, he just looks really pissed off. Things like that. Sure it will probably go unnoticed by a lot of people but these little details were fun to add in as a developer. A few fun evenings animating mecha pilots, what’s not to love? Besides, it’s the little things in life, as the saying goes!

Hey guys, Jason here again! Me and Simon have been hard at work getting our game ready for SGC2014. We still have some rough edges to polish but we figured we’d show you guys and gals what we’re up to.

This is STARDUST VANGUARDS! It’s a four player local arena fighter where your power ups are allied reinforcements! So in these screenshots you’ll see how busy and frantic it can get. As time goes on you earn RP (reinforcement points) both from your own kills and your allied units’ kills. And you can spend these points by charging up and holding down the “Call Reinforcements” button. If you hold it and release it quickly you can call only a few weak fighters to help, which could be useful. Or if you have max RP and charge up all the way you could call in a whole fleet of allied units. Your call! And there are a bunch of different tiers between minimum and maximum RP values if you’re in a fix and just need to call in what you have.
And you don’t only have to contend with other players though! Pirates are the pink guys and they’re not controlled by any player. Yes, pink! The manliest of colors naturally! And they will appear throughout the match to kill everyone indiscriminately. In these moments it might behoove you to team up with your opponents on the battlefield to kill off the pirates because these computer controlled enemies very well could win the battle themselves. They’re fierce and can change the flow of a battle if you’re not careful. How the pirates show up and what exactly they bring to the fight is completely random, so sometimes you may get a small group of pirate weak fighters, other times you may get a flotilla of transport ships (with huge RP bonuses for scoring a kill). Other times you might get an entire Cruiser fleet, or maybe even a rare VIP that awards the player to kill it maximum RP. This element of surprise on the battlefield keeps everyone on their toes to shift to the changing conditions on the field. It adds an element of strategy. Will you use your reinforcements offensively to go in for a kill? Use your front line to protect you from a barrage of bullets? Or play defensively and wait for the right time to counterattack? Hell, you die in one hit so you better make the right decision!
Your player is equipped with a sword and a -very- limited number of bullets. Your gun is a tool for distraction in STARDUST VANGUARDS. It automatically fires at the closest enemy to you and burns through its ammo in a matter of seconds. Sure it can kill, but you’re better off using it to seal off areas and force other players to retreat. So yeah, a little strategy, but at it’s core you’ll be dashing around and having energy blade swordfights.

What we can say is that it’s a retro inspired, pixel-art four-player dueling game that centers around the idea of multiple army’s fighting one another all at once! Each player takes the role of a vanguard leading their army to victory. We’ll have more details very very soon!

Well, hello again! It’s been a while! With old projects officially ended I decided to start working on prettying up the main hub of my site for new projects. I am in fact still mourning the loss the Heaven Variant even months later along with my amazing team that made it all possible, but the best thing to do is move forward right? The response from Heaven Variant’s posthumous album release has been excellent and I seriously appreciate everyone that downloaded and supported the album. You’re awesome!
What I plan to do is start hosting self-made games and music here, as well as any contract work or even art and music snippets I’m working on. And maybe even tutorials at some point, too, but we’ll see about that. I already have a few very small games I’ve been working on like the video above (if you follow me on Twitter you’ve seen it already). It’s just a prototype at this point, but it has a really cool vibe with the dystopian pixelated style along with all the water effects everywhere. Looks quite lively.
I’ll make sure to post anything new as soon as I can. I do have a few projects I’ve been working on that I’m really excited to make available.
